Neil Young Trunk Show

Concerts are great fun. Even when the band playing isn’t your favorite, the atmosphere is easy to get caught up in. That holds true in Neil Young Trunk Show. Watching something on a screen, even the big screen, just isn’t the same as seeing something in person, but it definitely is the next best thing. There is even a time or two that the audience member feels kind of obligated to clap.

The film features songs from various Neil Young concerts – all from the twilight of his career. It’s broken up by occasional, and brief, backstage sequences with little snippets of dialogue. But it is mostly to break up the monotony, rather than to add something to the experience.

The cinematography is oftentimes Youtube-like. A good number of the angles are from within the crowd, complete with folks holding up peace signs with their fingers and the backs of peoples’ heads, on what appears to be your basic video camera. Most of the camerawork, though, is done with more professionalism.

It’s an atypical movie. There isn’t any acting. There isn’t any script. It’s just Neil Young and his crew playing music. And because of that, the bottom line is that if you like Neil Young, you’ll enjoy this movie.
