DIY Decorating: Part 2
Musical Bowls
Vinyl is a recent hot topic lately. Suddenly, audio purists are insisting that analog is the way to go. In fact, the spring issue of Backdrop actually did an article on the topic. But there is so much more to a record than what first meets the ear. I found an interesting project on the Internet—making a bowl out of an old record—and decided to try it for myself.
You will need:
- a couple old records you don’t care about (Goodwill has them for about a dollar each)
- a large, glass or ceramic bowl (one with a diameter slightly smaller than the record)
- a baking sheet
- an oven
Remove the top shelf from your oven and preheat it to 200 degrees. If you want a shallower dish, turn the bowl upside-down. For a more bowl-like dish, set the bowl the right way up on the baking sheet. Bake the record on the bowl for seven to nine minutes. When you go to pull the bowl out of the oven, you’ll need potholders. Once the record is out, you will be able to shape the folds of the bowl as you like. You only have about a minute to do this before the vinyl starts to harden, so you’ll have to work fast. Once the record hardens, it is actually firmer than what it was before you melted it.
If you’re doing the deeper bowl, you’ll want to open the oven after about five minutes and gently press on the center of the record, so it falls evenly into the center of the bowl. If you don’t, you might get a lopsided shape.
I have three of these now; one holds my keys and the other two are in my kitchen. They make great serving bowls for things like chips or popcorn and are great conversation starters at parties.
Tomorrow’s blog is all about function, so don’t miss out on a few DIY items you’ll actually use every day!
