Catching Up with Papadosio's Anthony Thogmartin

By Alex Lubetkin

What started as a couple of spirited jam sessions has evolved into one of the hottest up-and-coming acts in rock. Born in Athens, Ohio, jam/electronic/whatever-the-hell-you-want-to-call-them band Papadosio has seen their success skyrocket over the past two years. Comprised of former Ohio University and Hocking College students, the band, playing through the east coast as a part of their Awake Inside Tour, made a pit stop in Athens, Ohio, last month to play at The Union. Backdrop got an opportunity to talk to guitarist/vocalist Anthony Thogmartin about the band's journey, future projects, and what it feels like to return to the town where everything came together.

Team Yizzo Takes Texas

By Alex Lubetkin

In the 1990’s there existed a show of ecological good-doers called “Captain Planet and the Planeteers,” in which five youths were each given the power of one of the elements of nature to defend Earth from further destruction. That is what Ohio University junior JaVaughn Graves, known in the emcee world as CG, compares his rap group Yizzo to.

Ghost Busters

By Julianne Mobilian

Halloween in Athens has long passed, but that doesn’t mean the scary fun has to stop there. At least that’s how one man views it, sans booze. Nate Gastin, the lead investigator for Dark Night Investigators (DNI), a paranormal activity-searching group, lives for the thrill of ghosts and hauntings. His team is from Logan, Ohio, which is half an hour away from Athens.  He has taken on dozens of paranormal cases, ranging from claims of haunted houses to paranormal activity in graveyards all over the state. He has never investigated Ohio University’s campus, one of the “Top-50 Haunted Places in the Country,” but he’d love the chance to some day. Unfortunately, it won’t be until the university is compliant with his standard practices of paranormal searching, but perhaps one day you might see Gastin and the rest of the DNI team around campus.

Review of WZRD

By Nick Harley and Zak Kolesar

The arrival of the “alternate to everything” Alternative album from Kid Cudi is here. After drifting further and further from Earth with each release, Cudi is finally seeing if the world is ready to truly embrace the Martian. Collaborating with producer Dot da Genius, Cudi finds himself making a whole record in a baritone croon accompanied by guitar noodling, slowly becoming hip-hop’s Lou Reed, and going under the moniker of WZRD. The experimental album slips at times, but mostly spellbinds as WRZD truly conjures up some magic.

Going The Distance

By Melissa Thompson

It’s about that time of year when seniors start thinking about their future, where they will be next winter and items they haven’t yet checked off their bucket lists. Ohio University senior Kendall Kidder-Goshhorn has decided to add the Athens Half-Marathon to hers. Her running experience from high school and inspiration from a fellow sorority sister’s participation in the Columbus Half Marathon pushed her to research several half-marathons. Athens’ half became her top pick because it worked perfectly with a 12-week training program that she had started winter quarter.

Beyond the Binary

By Jackie Bon

Art lies scattered on the desk, floor and the walls. Somebody has been hard at work. The shared studio space has a high ceiling—a kind of room that can swallow you whole. Against the wall of the studio lies a plaster cast of a body, like the hallowed exoskeleton of cicada that molted to continue its evolution.

TM:103 Review

By Nick Harley

On his latest album since 2008, Young Jeezy has decided to devolve from The Recession’s socio-conscious rhyming to make TM 103: Hustlerz Ambition a return to the drug-fueled corner stories that originally made him famous. On “Way Too Gone,” when Jeezy makes his proclamation to throw us into the Delorean and takes us all the way back to 2005, it’s almost enough to make the listener laugh, because this album is so 2005.
